Update: Changing the conversation about women

17 Jul Update: Changing the conversation about women

Several months ago, I told you about PRI’s initiative, Across Women’s Lives. I was asked along with a select group of women writers to partner with PRI and SheKnows Media to share news stories about women worldwide. The goal: To change the sobering statistic pictured above. Only 24 percent of news stories feature women in any way, and when they do, women are often portrayed as victims or objects.

Halfway through the project, I’m happy to report that we’ve exceeded our goal. In six months, the incubator achieved:

  • 100,000,000 social media exposures of the #womenslives hashtag
  • 18,000,000 unique people reached by the #womenslives hashtag in Twitter alone
  • 16,000 Tweets using #womenslives by all Twitter users

And the project is still going. For a full report of what we’ve accomplished to date, check out this article by Lisa Stone of BlogHer.

If you want to be part of the movement to highlight women across the globe, follow the #womenslives hashtag on social media and share stories that matter to you. Or visit PRI’s dedicated site, Across Women’s Lives.
